"The Tale of the Parachuting Cats!"
by Dr Tony Croke, integrative chiropractor and wellness educator.

In the early 1950's, the Dayak people of Borneo were suffering terribly from malaria.  The World Health Organisation decided to spray the insecticide DDT to kill the mosquitoes that spread the disease.  Sure enough, the mosquito population was almost wiped out and the malaria outbreak was controlled. The WHO celebrated their success!

A few months later, the thatched roofs of peoples' houses started caving in.  It seems that the DDT also killed a particular type of wasp that had previously dined on the larvae of thatch-eating caterpillars and kept the caterpillars under control.  As well, the poisoned insects were eaten by geckoes, which then died.  Feral cats started eating the dead geckoes and so they died too!

As the cats died off, the rat population boomed and the people were then threatened by potential outbreaks of typhus and bubonic plague. To cope with these problems, which it had itself created, the WHO came up with the only answer they could think of - they parachuted 14,000 live cats into Borneo!  I'm not kidding - they actually did!

An amusing story, but what does it have to do with us?

Whenever we treat a symptom with drugs, we're effectively doing the same thing as the WHO!  It's not unusual for a new person to come into the office on several medications.  On closer inspection, often one or more drugs is simply to deal with the side effects of the other drugs!  It's like the little old lady who swallowed the fly!

Sometimes drugs are necessary when the body has gone past the point of being able to self-heal.  However most health problems respond a lot better when the cause is treated, rather than the effects.  For example, an adjustment, a change in diet, detoxing and some extra exercise is almost always a better option than cholesterol medication and blood pressure tablets.

Your body has a pharmacy of drugs built into it!  Every drug you will ever need is made at the right time, in the right dose - and without a single side-effect!  And it all happens under the watchful eye of your nervous system.

Your adjustments remove nervous system interference, making your body more able to keep itself in balanced, perfect health.

Doesn't that make more sense than throwing cats out of aeroplanes?
