Nikki and Sienna's amazing story..... I have been studying naturopathy part time for the past three years. I became interested in attaining perfect health about eight years ago and was fit and healthy when I fell pregnant. I had a fantastic pregnancy with lots of gentle exercise, yoga, massage and great food. Unfortunately, at 38 weeks I found out that I had Strep B, which instantly meant the totally natural birth I had planned was now going to involve a certain amount of intervention, both with the heart monitor and antibiotics. After a 30 hour labour (and four doses of antibiotics) Sienna Lily arrived with a bang! She also was given a dose of antibiotics and with no surprise to me, developed jaundice on Day three and I am sure her poor little liver is still recovering. Right from the beginning Sienna was a ‘high needs’ baby. She desired lots of closeness, cuddles, bouncing, rocking and comfort from the breast, but of course she was an absolute delight to be around and still is.
At four months of age Sienna started teething and over the period of a weekend she was covered with red, angry, spotty eczema from head to toe. Sienna had already visited an osteopath, had cranial therapy and regularly saw a naturopath. Over the next three months I tried to deal with the eczema naturally by eliminating known allergic/toxic foods from my diet (as I was breast feeding), using a variety of natural creams, increasing my intake of EFA’s and probiotics and frequent visits to the naturopath for both Sienna and myself. During this period Sienna was extremely distressed, irritated and generally unhappy as nothing was working. She scratched constantly and managed to rub off most of her hair and her eyebrows.
It was at this point that I gave in to my husband’s request that we take Sienna to a dermatologist. He immediately prescribed Cortisone, told me that I was a bad mother for letting my child get to this point and allergy tested her. She came up as allergic to cashews, almonds and eggs. When I told him that I had already removed these things from my diet he insisted that I had not and that when I did she would probably be fine! So in desperation we tried the Cortisone cream and two days later our child was clear and for the first time in three months we were not up for hours in the night trying to distract her from the incessant itch. As her skin was clear we did not apply Cortisone the next night and of course she hardly slept and by the morning the eczema was back. We then got into a negative cycle of using Cortisone for varying lengths of time and eventually it stopped working at all.
Sienna had always been a child who ran ‘hot’ with frequent fevers, which we now realise, was because she was constantly fighting off infections on her skin. At eleven months old she developed one of those fevers and when it hit 41ºC and she could barely hold her head up so we rushed her to hospital. They sent us home with some antibiotics, but the next day she was still at 41ºC and there was something on her neck, which did not look like eczema. So on my sister-in-laws encouragement we took Sienna back to the emergency room and they admitted her immediately as the thing on her neck was the herpes virus. Apparently it is common for children with severe eczema to get this, due to the skin having so many openings.
Only two days before I had taken her to a Christmas Concert and we presume that a child with a cold sore touched her without washing their hands. It looked like a rat had gnawed at her neck – it was horrific. She was also diagnosed with a staph infection. She spent five days on a drip in isolation, but the one positive that did come out of this experience was learning how to apply wet dressings. This was a life changing moment for us, as for the first time in eight months we were able to provide Sienna with a small amount of relief. Sienna was sick for a full month after this hospital experience and the glands at the back of her neck, under her arms and in her groin came up at this point and did not go down until we started to detox her five months later.
I got in touch with a paediatric chiropractor and a naturopath who specialised in children. I also started seeing a kinesiologist during this time and Sienna was certainly a little better, but not by much. Her stomach was constantly swollen up like a starving child and nothing we tried could calm it down. We visited the emergency room many times in this period as she also developed asthma and had an anaphylactic episode. I took her for allergy testing again and she came up allergic to eggs, cashews, almonds, dairy, beef, potatoes and peanuts. By now we had a paediatrician, dermatologist, immunologist and an allergist. We were often at hospital for visits and the pressure to use stronger cortisone, give her Zyrtec every day and Vellergen (a stronger form of Phernergan) every night, so basically drug and suppress her, was intense. As was the pressure to make ‘an informed choice’ and vaccinate her. It was in this time that I told my husband no more doctors and then heard about Jacqui and the detox machine, so I decided to give her a call.
From the first time I met Jacqui I liked her and so did Sienna. By now she was 16 months old and very sensitive due to exposure to so many doctors and therapists. She often cried hysterically and scratched around all new people. But, much to my surprise Sienna happily played and let Jacqui take her levels. As she was teething, the nappy rash was horrendous. It was red, scaly and painful over the whole area that her nappy covered and was getting worse. Due to this, her first detox was a bit painful and she lasted for only eight minutes in the bath. That night she was up pretty much all night and there was a lot of crying, but the next day she was calmer and by the end of the week the nappy rash was gone. We were amazed. Each time Sienna had a detox she was more unsettled than normal in the night, but within the next few days the skin started to look better. By this time it was very rare for Sienna to be unwrapped at all, as the itching was just too much for her. After two months of detoxing I stopped wrapping her during the days and her skin started to look like normal skin again.
Six months later Sienna is rarely wrapped during the day. When teething she is a bit more acidic and she needs more cream (Chickweed provides the most relief) and sometimes a wet dressing, but in general Sienna’s health is improving constantly. Her lymphatic system has settled down and her glands are back to normal. Nappy rash is never an issue anymore, incredibly enough even when teething. Her hair has grown back and she now has a healthy mop of wavy brown hair. The staph (little pimples on the skin) is gone and her stomach is no longer swollen. She even sleeps through the night every now and then. Sienna eats a predominantly organic diet, even though it is still quiet restrictive.
Over this time I have continued to see my naturopath, kinesiologist and chiropractor and it seems like the detox machine provide a pathway for the other treatments, especially the herbs, to work.
After such an incredible journey I have decided to join the Perfect Balance team. I am sure I will continue to see massive improvements in Sienna’s health, but also throughout my whole family. I know that there are many people out there struggling with their own health, though often do not know which way to turn for help. The Perfect Balance Detox machine does work on a variety of illnesses, diseases, weight loss and gives an immediate burst to your general wellbeing. I look forward to helping other people turn their lives around and begin living happy, fulfilling lives.
